The Wallow - Nestled in the heart of Victoria Falls National Park, our home in Zimb is in a private game reserve for a wilderness experience like no other. Under canvas, it’s the essence of authenticity in our deluxe tented suites perched along the river with a cloud of mist in the sky from the falls. Highlights include stunning Batoka Gorge, tour of Vic Falls, cruises on the Zambezi with crocs and hippos, visit to Wildlife Trust Sanctuary and more. Victoria Falls, UNESCO site, is one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World and capital of adventure in Africa. It’s more than just viewing the majestic beauty of wild cascades & rainbows over miles of the world's widest falls. Enjoy activities from gorge swings to rafting, micro flights, Lion or Cheetah Walk and more.

Cross into Zambia for more thrills.  November is the best time to visit for great weather and for you to experience here the iconic Devils Pool, most thrilling swim in the world. In a deep natural pool, your guide leads you to falls edge for your best selfies ever. Land lovers can opt for Elephant Cafe or the incredible Lion Walk experience here. Both countries offer endless fun.

Chobe Botswana- Our home is the intimate Bakwena Lodge for game drives, water safaris, bicycles in the bush and village walks. Chobe National Park, "land of the giants," holds the world's highest concentration of elephant herds, around 200,000 ellies and we’ll get up so close you won’t even need a zoom lens. It’s a paradise for animal lovers with fewer tourists and vast herds of game.

Kruger Shalati - Our home is the 5 star Shalati Train Hotel, an engineering wonder that CNN voted as “top luxury hotel of the world”. Featured on Netflix, it’s now trending so famous we had to book a year out. Our 2022 group loved their vintage carriage rooms perched high above the Sabie River with wildlife roaming freely below in tranquil silence. There’s no fences here, and animals are drawn to the river. Enjoy the spa, pool, gourmet meals and high tea, just mind the monkeys. World-renowned Kruger National Park is big game territory. At Shalati, we are right there first before jeeps crowd the scene. Enjoy game drives morning and night when predators actively chase their prey.  That experience the world's longest zip line or ethical interaction at Elephant Whispers.

Bakwena Lodge is an intimate, privately owned safari camp on the banks of the Chobe River, offering an inclusive safari option in an area with some of the finest game viewing to be had. Chobe is well known for its predators and is home to an estimated 200,000 elephants. Activities, all based in-house, are naturally focused on land and water safaris, Bicycle Tour and a sundowner cruise to the meeting place of four countries (the only one in the world!). Bakwena's excellent guides will endeavor to make your stay in Chobe a highlight of any safari. The lodges’ eco-credentials include a natural swimming pool filtered entirely by plants, employment policies, food choices, building methods and a host of otherwise unseen ways in which any negatives to the lodge surroundings or environment are addressed.

Nov 11 - Safari Game Drives in Chobe NP & Village Walk Botswana

After a hearty breakfast, we head out on our first Game Drive.  Elephants, elephants everywhere - Chobe Game Reserve is known for having the most incredible elephant experience in the world! The national park is famous for its abundant lions, leopards, cheetahs, hippos, giraffes, Buffalo, zebras, hyenas, crocs and more. All species are drawn to the River's edge for water along the shores.

Early Morning Game Drive – Grab a bite of continental breakfast before departing into the Chobe Reserve -  This morning, we enter the Chobe Reserve on open game vehicles in search of the Big 5.  Search for the elusive leopard, the wild dog and all while being surrounded by elephants coming down to the water to drink.  Bakwena is the proud owner of six game vehicles allowing extended drives to suit guests and the chance to linger longer at game sightings. Experienced guides with extensive knowledge of the Chobe National Park provide an entertaining and educational addition to your safari.  After the game drive head back to the lodge for a delicious brunch.                            The Big 5...

After lunch, join a guided Village Walk where you get to experience the local way of life.  Bakawanna Lodge fully supports Kazungla and says, “The cultural exchange is a means for us to break down a social barrier, transforming us into a ‘we’ based community.” Unlike the majority of developing countries, Botswana has no slum areas. Integration rather than segregation is a way of life here just as human and wildlife conflict is reduced through day to day co-existence. There is a tangible sense of integrity that sets this country apart.  AFS Travelers love to give back and will enjoy visiting this village to learn about the local customs and culture. (Some people visit the tourist trap cultural villages, but we want to offer an authentic village experience where we know we can make a difference.) I can proudly say that due to the incredible generosity of AFS Travelers. We have put roofs on schools, sponsored desks and computers, brought books and more to make children extremely happy. We will visit the local primary school with an AFS Joy bomb to make their day! Let's all bring what they want (candy) and need (school supplies).

Something special here is a guided Bicycle Safari Tour as well. It's pedal power for about an hour. Our lodge has 20 cruiser bikes built for comfort for guests to enjoy the sights and sounds of Africa. The sense of personal freedom and space is worth the effort, not to mention the excitement of seeing an elephant in route!

Evening Game Drive –  We gather for tea and a light snack before heading off for our second game-viewing experience this afternoon. Predators are most actively seeking their prey in the evening and it's thrilling as our rangers use spotlights to track the animals.  Get your cameras ready as we head into the Chobe Reserve to be ready to watch the game as they filter down to the river for their last drink of the day before the sun sets.  Head back to the lodge for dinner and rest after an incredible day.

Overnight: Chobe Bakwena Lodge.   View Brochure              Fully Inclusive – Includes accommodation, all meals, laundry, wine, beer, cider and soft drinks, two game activities per day, Chobe National Park entry fees,

Nov 13 - Victoria Falls and Wildlife Trust Tours

This morning we will head off to view the great Victoria Falls on a guided tour.

Guided Tour of the Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
Victoria Falls is one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage site.  On your guided walking tour of the falls, you will have the opportunity to discover the many facets of the magnificent Victoria Falls, including Horseshoe Falls, Rainbow Falls, Boiling Pot and more. Explore the rainforest while learning about the history of the Falls, its geological significance and its flora and fauna. You'll have the opportunity to soak up the beautiful vistas, lush surroundings, magical waterfalls, and the spray of the Falls. It’s always dramatic. The sights and sounds are humbling in this masterpiece of nature.

After the tour of the falls, you will be given some time to browse the local Craft Markets with so many wonderful African masks, batiks, wood carvings, and beaded souvenirs, among others.  We will head back to the lodge for a delicious lunch overlooking the Masuwe River.

No trip to the falls is complete without experiencing a Sunset Cruise on the great Zambezi River. If you have not watched the magnificent sun setting over Africa while the stillness of night creeps in, you have not lived Africa.   The Sunset cruise is very popular and includes finger snacks, beer, wine, local spirits and soft drinks. There are great photo opportunities against often-spectacular African sunsets. Flocks of birds skim the waterline as the sun sets behind the African skyline. Always a favorite in Victoria Falls. At dusk, especially with a full moon, the spray creates rare lunar rainbows or Moonbows over the sky.

Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust Visit -  We focus on creating a space where guests can form a relationship with and learn about the environment they are in. We do this through our partnership with The Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust, located in the Wild Horizons Wildlife Sanctuary adjacent to the lodge. The Trust is a non-profit entity promoting conservation awareness, education, and community empowerment. A tour of the Trust is part of our guest experience. This place fully supports Zimbabwe villages and conservation initiatives so your booking here Gives Back with sustainable tourism.  We will visit the High-Care Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre and Laboratory facilities to learn about innovative conservation initiatives from a team of passionate research and wildlife experts. One never knows what animals may be here from the recently rescued, to those being treated for wounds or rewilding back into the bush. This Trust strives to save all beloved species from extinction.

To protect the sensitive environment, only 16 guests may visit and only possible Nov to Feb.  It is highly recommended to book a Livingstone Island Tour in advance. After a briefing, your guide will gently escort you to falls edge for the iconic and best Instagram of all photos of your lifetime.

Gorge Swing at Zero Gravity!

The Wild Horizons Gorge Swing is a thrilling and mind blowing experience. Leap into the wide-open air as you plunge into the mouth of the Batoka gorge, Victoria Falls. Scream as you break free of the fear and trepidation you felt before you threw yourself off the platform. Imagine swinging in a child's swing in the playground...now imagine a giant swing 95m long and 120m high above water...now imagine a 70m free fall before you begin swinging. Test your courage! It’s a gentler version of a bungee jump.  Our Gorge Swing is suspended across the gorge at a point where the width is 316m and 120m deep. A harness is attached to the jumper and then the jumping ropes, the other end of which is pivoted to the middle of the cable.

To put the Victoria Falls into true perspective, they must really be seen from the air. The sheer size and grandeur of the spectacle becomes all the more clearer from above.  The huge Zambezi River flowing slowly south as the water spreads across the full width of a great rent in the earth before crashing over the lip in a burst of spray and then squeezing into a narrow, foaming, blast of water rushing down the zigzag funnel of the gorges.

Back at our luxury Wallow camp, enjoy a Boma Dinner under the stars in authentic old African tribesman style with a delicious barbecue feast and dancing to drums.

Nov 15 -  Fly to South Kruger, Game Drives and Shalti!

Transfer to Victoria Falls airport- approximately an hour for your flight to South Africa. Flight from Vic Falls to Kruger MQP  10:30AM to 12:15PM.

On the the southern most tip of Africa and one of the most culturally and geographically diverse places on earth, fondly known by locals as the 'Rainbow Nation', South Africa boasts 11 official languages, and its inhabitants are influenced by a fascinating mix of cultures. Its untamed wilderness is astonishing: wildlife roams freely across massive unfenced game reserves such as the world-famous Kruger National Park.

On arrival at Kruger Mpumalanga International airport you will be collected and transferred by coach to the world famous Kruger National Park. Transfer time about 2 hours though the park. Keep your eyes focused for the many wild animals along the way.

The vast Kruger National Park is a tract of land nearly 20 000 square kilometres ( 7722 square miles) , allowing the wildlife to live in a protected space and follow their old migratory routes. More recently it has become part of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, an international collaboration joining the Limpopo Park in Mozambique and the Gonarezhou Park in Zimbabwe. As a result, animals can now move freely across international borders as they would have done for thousands of years.

Check into the fabulous Kruger Shalati, voted by Conde Nast as one of the most exciting luxury hotels in the world.  Everyone is talking about it! On arrival, we'll be welcomed with high tea before heading out on our evening Game Drive into Kruger. Early morning and evening game drives are the best time of day to view the game as they are most active before the heat of the day. Track the lion as they hunt for prey, spend time with the elephant and search for the elusive leopard and wild dog.

8PM back to lodge for dinner.  Kruger Shalati guests enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner and high tea daily with all drinks included. The food is truly exceptional and meals seem to roll from one gourmet meal to another, all served on a beautiful deck. Watch out for the monkeys.

Airlines must notify you of such and protect you if problem with flight.  Consider flying in early to ensure you’ll be there once trip begins.   Always download and use your airlines app! Use app to track your booking, delays, bags, to show boarding pass and to contact them. Also, premium credit cards often offer many air perks, assistance, insurance, lounge passes, global entry and more. Read more at www.tpg.com for best cards.

Want to fly business class?  Many but don’t realize fares range from 4K to 9K. We do have two good contacts for AFS that can get seats at nearly half cost by combining award miles….  ali@above9.travel  Ph. (855) 777-6336 or britney@business-class.com 305-390-4132 or see skylux.com or business-class.com.  Tell them Suzy sent you.

Group Air -  It’s fun to fly together but airlines need a minimum of 15 which we never reach now days. Most want to do their own for flexibility. If however I find a great schedule and price by March 1, I will let you know.

Important Air Dates -  NOV 8-18. Fly from USA roundtrip to Johannesburg JNB.  Depart on either NOV 8 or 9 (overnight.  Land starts morning NOV 10.)

Return from Johannesburg NOV 18 with flight home after 6:00 PM.  Our safari starts at 8AM on November 10 at the JNB airport.

To ensure you don't miss out, we recommend arriving on November 9 and staying overnight. One of our top picks is Sunrock Guesthouse, https://www.sunrock.co.za/ , but you can find plenty of other hotels near JNB airport by doing a quick Google search. For decades all our AFS or stay at the Sunrock, around $70 per night including airport transfers and great breakfast. Book it now direct by email and tell them you’re with AFS.

Doing Own Air & A/p Transfers Many airlines offer direct or connecting flights from the USA to Johannesburg, South Africa. These include South African Airways, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, American Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, British Airways, Lufthansa, and Air France.

I like to add a stopover before post-trip to break up the long journey and augment my vacation. It’s a difficult call to get your seat now or to wait until a fare sale. You can put in dates at Google Flights for “fare alerts” when prices drop. Fly from your hometown to the cheapest major gateway (eg. JFK, HOU, LAX, etc)  for best fares. Check credit cards to combine miles and points with cash.

We like Google Flights.  3rd-party booking engines like Expedia, make it easy to book, but it is nearly impossible to handle air problems.  Buy direct from airline or pay a travel agent to ticket you.  If you need help air with the economy seat,  our guy in Delhi can help; email flights@diversedestination.com with your exact air dates, destination, passport name, and details with birthdate.

Meet Up With Group- Again, we meet on Nov 10 at 8AM at JNB Airport.   More details in our departure email later.

Internal air:  all group must be on these flights. Airfares are always subject to change until ticketed. Price was $698 now $735. We have secured your seats and hope it won't increase. Once final payments are in, we can ticket you .

  • Nov 10  Fly Airlink JNB to BBK (Kasane)   11:50AM to 1:35PM.
  • Nov 15 Fly Vic Falls to Kruger MQP  10:30AM to 12:15PM.
  • Nov 18 Fly Airlink – SZK to JNB  1:35PM – 2:40PM in plenty of time to catch evening fights back to USA

Baggage– Think light to ease your burden, not like you’re fleeing your homeland.  You change hotel properties several times. 1 carry-on bag & 1 medium suitcase not to exceed 45lb checked bag – weigh on a bathroom scale.   Leave space for great souvenirs. Be sure to attach ID inside and out of carry-on and checked bag.

Packing-    Google Zambia or Botswana weather a week prior. It’s summer in this part of the world.

Totally casual trip and easy to pack. Shorts and short sleeve tops by day. Jeans and long sleeves at night. Early morning game drives are cold. Bring warm jacket. Footwear – no hiking boots, sandals or sneakers are fine. Bring hat with chinstrap, daypack, sunglasses, insect repellent, umbrella, swimsuit, flashlight. See packing tips below. A month out, Niki will send you more details as well but it's easy to pack for.

Cool travel hacks from our AFSers! Pack overnight outfit in your carry-on, liquid IV packets to hydrate, use packing cubes, downy wrinkle spray, Apple AirTags, extra nylon bag to check laundry home, tons of US dollars for extra tips, fully charged travel banks, less is more, get global entry.

Electric– So Africa: Type D, M,  Botswana: D, G, M, Zambia: C,D,G, Zimbabwe: C,D,G. (Note: Most universal plug kits have D, G & C., So Africa is more unique as it resembles a US 224 V plug. You can get this at the airport in Johannesburg or inexpensively on Amazon.)

Cell phones and tablets do not need a converter; you only need an adapter plug.  AFSers often leave charger cords in room, so be sure to double-check your room before check out. All properties have hairdryers.  See https://www.power-plugs-sockets.com

Money Matters – Always bring some cash!  You will need some cash for personal tipping, meals, and shopping. $300 cash should suffice.    Change currency on arrival at airport, bank, or hotels or withdraw local currency from an ATM.  Note -independent ATMs are risky due to skimmer scams. Safest ATMs are at airport and banks. Always shield your pin number when entering.

Master Card and Visa widely accepted.  Amex rarely accepted except at hotels.   Credit cards are far safer than using your debit card. I use my credit card for most purchases.  Many cards now offer no foreign transaction fees. (Some countries in Africa and Asia require new bills dated after 2016. Older bills not accepted when changing money.)

Currency  Exchange Rate   $1 = 18.75     Newer undamaged US dollars are accepted at most places in Bots, Zim and Zam.  Good idea to bring a number of one and five dollar bills.

Gratuities – It’s protocol to tip our local guides, drivers, rangers, boat crews, assistant porters, lodge staff, waitstaff and other ground services. $90 will be billed to your final payment invoice. We divide into small groups of 6 to 7 people. For your daily game drives with your own personal ranger. Please tip $5 to $10 per day pp directly to him. Your GTL will advise. Bring an envelope of 60 to 70 USD to draw from.

Tipping on own – If service is stellar, feel free to give more directly.  All we tourists leave behind is our reputation. I carry a stash of US ones in an envelope to draw from as needed. Porters – AFSers roll bags to their room.  If you use a porter, please tip.  For group lunches or dinners included, please leave $2 for waitstaff!

Communication– Internet is available throughout. With smartphones, be sure to check with your provider for rates and coverage for international phone plans before departure. Data Roaming rates can be expensive. To reach home – Texting, iMessage, WhatsApp, and Facebook messaging when using WIFI. Be cautious using public Wi-Fi without using VPN. Without VPN never open attachments or view financial or personal accounts on the Internet while abroad.  Phone calls, text messages, and data usage of all kinds, it is crucial to understand that, unless you are connected to Wi-Fi, every use of your phone incurs a data toll. That means that viewing and downloading email, browsing the web, viewing social media, and mapping all incur data charges, as do applications that we sometimes assume to be “free,” such as Skype and WhatsApp. Unless you are connected to Wi-Fi, however, WhatsApp is using cellular data, so you are getting charged at your provider’s international roaming data rate.  Facebook Messenger Phone is an easy free way to make calls.

Retail Therapy – fabulous handicrafts – African tribal art, masks, beadwork to gold jewelry in each country. Bargain all. AFS tip – save all your shopping until departure at JNB airport. You can get all at the store called Out of Africa and they can ship to USA.

Accommodations –– Our itinerary has links to hotel.  Note that hotels can change, but it’s rare.

Optional -  you’ll have the option to choose many different activities and Victoria Falls.   Details later.

Leisure Time –  For your free time, it’s best to arrive and ask our local expert guides for suggestions.  We notice many newer clients pre-plan many activities on the AFS trip well before they arrive, often with disappointing results.  Our daily itineraries are pretty full, but there will be some free time. Expert travelers revel in the element of surprise in a new destination and allow the wind to blow them where it will. Use Google Maps on your phone to find everything nearby.

For free day Vic Falls - AFS there's love Devils Pool photo op on Livingstone island (only October to January), Flights of angels helicopter or micro flights, canoeing Zambezi river, Makuni Big 5 Tours Lion or Cheetah walk in Zambia, bridge bungee jump and gorge swing, white water rafting class five and more.

Amending tour pre-or post-trip. We honor your independent spirit but encourage you to extend more days at the trip’s end when you’re acclimated well to the destination.  If you add another country, we often see many AFSers on Facebook urging others to join them what do you consider the cost of tours, transport, hotels, etc.  Stopovers are great to add, but understand AFS has no responsibility for the quality of your trip.

Private Facebook Group Page  –  The benefit of the Private FB Group Page is that you have an opportunity to introduce yourself to your fellow travelers before departure and share trip photos during and after the tour.  The link can be found in your Wetravel welcome letter after your initial deposit.  (We found that some never read the Trip Tips jumping right to the Private FB Group Page assuming they will get all trip info needed. Often, they only receive rumors or misinformation. All important information is ALWAYS emailed to each participant and posted in Trip Tips under UPDATES. Nobody misses a thing.)

Emergency Contact – AFS phone or text 770-432-8225, or email us at https://afstravelers.com/contact-us/    More contacts will be provided with your Final Docs email 2 to 3 weeks before departure. Your guide can handle a call home for a true emergency. Do not expect to use your trip leader’s cell phone; you’ll need to use your own.

Cancellation Penalty –  At booking, we sent you our terms and conditions. Click here for our Terms & Conditions   . Briefly, on land packages, we’ll refund your deposit less than $155 until 45 days prior to the trip’s final payment due date.   Any cancellation after this date will result in full forfeiture of your deposit. AFS reserves the right to resell or otherwise use the canceled space at our discretion.

Travel Insurance– While travel insurance is optional, in today’s world, we highly encourage you to get standard coverage to cover trip interruption and cancellation.  The best source for all is www.insuremytrip.com.   CFAR or cancel for any reason covers Covid but is expensive.  Note that no company covers for fear.

Preexisting conditions – If you would like the security of travel insurance and have a pre-existing condition (elderly parent, medical, etc.), you must purchase insurance within 15 days from your initial trip deposit in order to assure full coverage.  The trip cost can be amended or adjusted as needed after your initial purchase (eg. like adding an air ticket cost later). You can buy travel insurance at any time, just know that there may be some possible limitations if purchased outside the 15 day period.  We like TravelSafe, Allianz or Seven Corners.

Travel Psychology 101  – Prepare for your departure joyfully with no contempt before investigation upon arrival. Please understand that with travel, things are not like at home and changes may occur. Great trips work best for those with an open mind, flexible attitude and adventuresome spirit.  If changes occur, embrace them with serendipity. Who knows?… The unexpected may prove to be a better experience.  Adapt and go with the flow with a laid-back attitude.  Be spontaneous. Be tolerant of foreign cultures in respecting their centuries of traditions. Embrace the differences. Be curious, not shy. Smile – locals will sense your energy of kindness and kindness always begets kindness.  Our common goal is to experience different cultures, make new friends, get great photos, have large fun, and return home safely with memories worthy of recollection.

The best spirit of an Explorer requires the openness of a child – Suzy

“When traveling, remember that a foreign country isn’t designed to make you comfortable.  It’s designed to make its own people comfortable.” – Clinton Fadiman

Please note that AFS is non-partisan – With our homogeneous groups, we all want to focus on the common denominator – our love of travel.  In today’s divisive world, we suggest members not discuss politics and if you must, please practice my rule of TOK:  Tolerance, Open-mindedness and Kindness.

Please be advised that the operation of some tours may need to be rearranged or modified to suit local conditions, but all activities stated will be included.  We are here for you to address any questions about your trip. In time, we believe travel will begin to normalize with less rules and we appreciate your cooperation until then.  Now more than ever before, travelers value the privilege of travel to explore our world. You’ve been waiting so long, it’s time for recess!

Sri Lanka and Maldives trip tips 2024

Prepare to be thrilled by Enchanting Sri Lanka & The Dreamy Maldives. In Sri Lanka, the wildlife will amaze you with great photo ops and its fascinating history. Our itinerary is it an explorer’s delight with ancient temples, mystical Buddhist sites and active fun each day and scenic wonders! Our past groups here raved as “best AFS trip ever”. You were wise to book these places with our group, as they are challenging to do on own.

Trip Tips are designed to answer trip-related questions. It’s your responsibility to read this information.  Updates and addendums will be posted here.  Some travelers have lost their entire trip for not reading what we send on visas, air details, inoculations, etc.  Check back from time to time.

  • FINAL PAYMENT DUE DEC 28, 2023    Wetravel is our data management company, it allows you to pay by check electronically without a fee. Simply follow the instructions. Your fearless GTL (Gracious Trip Leader, not a guide but a liaison between our guides and group to ensure things run smoothly.)

Deanna Purdie:  Based in Atlanta, making her way around the globe with over 60 countries visited…mostly solo until finding out about AFS in 2017.  With degrees in Photography and Graphic Design from SCAD, she enjoys helping others capture and create interesting posts for Social Media that your friends are sure to envy. Also, with a background in IT/Communications, she is able to help solve any tech issues you may have with your devices or apps.  She enjoys a healthy active lifestyle of working out, skiing, snorkeling and hiking.  Always researching and learning…she has been studying and speaking French for the past 8+ years and will be sure to have at least 2-3 new Travel Hacks and tips for you each trip!

Deanna is a great asset to AFS, not just because of her capable skills in leadership and her wisdom, but it’s her joyous enthusiasm in guiding others in exploration! Trip Prep:
  • Read the revised Heading Abroad with AFS, especially if you are new to AFS.
  • Ensure your passport is valid 6 months after return date with two blank pages – these are Visa pages, not addendum pages.  We recommend renewing your passport well ahead of any planned international travel. Take a photo of your passport to store in the cloud or bring a copy. If you lose your passport, US embassies now except a digital copy from your email.  Also good to scan any docs, Covid test, trip tips, etc.
  • To speed through US Customs download Mobile Passport.  Look in your App Store for details.
  • Notify bank and cc company of travel dates so they don’t block charges.
  • All airline rules differ.  It is imperative to read your airline rules on their website to ensure a smooth departure! Always check your flight before departure.
Visa Requirements: Ensure you have the appropriate visa to enter Sri Lanka. You can obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online before your trip. https://srilanka.visaonlinegov.org/apply-visa I tried their site out and found it slow loading times even with a fast Wi-Fi connection. The cost of their Visa is $20.  If you prefer a faster and more user-friendly alternative, you can consider using a paid service like ivisa.com or google others but you’ll probably pay close to $50 to get the visa and other such services. While they charge more, their website is easier to navigate and loads rapidly. The choice is yours, and both options will facilitate your visa application.  (No visa for Maldives.)
  • It is crucial to note that you should not obtain the visa just yet, as it is only valid for 30 days. Wait until March 1 to purchase the visa. We will also send you a reminder.   When you do apply, please ensure you complete the application accurately, make the payment using a credit card, and remember to bring a copy of the visa with you during your travel.  You will need a copy of your passport valid at least six months with two blank visa pages, a digital passport photo 2”x2”.  You can take one you can take a headshot selfie against a blank wall and crop it accordingly and a credit card for payment.
Fitness level – 2   No trouble walking as not to unnecessarily slow up the group. Most of our days involve extensive walking, sometimes on uneven pavement. Know your limits. General Air Info –  Route changes can happen now. Airlines must notify you of such and protect you if problem with flight.  Consider flying in early to ensure you’ll be there once trip begins.   Always download and use your airlines app! Use app to track your booking, delays, bags, to show boarding pass and to contact them. If you have a flight problem go to the airline’s website “contact us” page or reach them by text, social media, Skype or call their international number.  Also, premium credit cards often offer many air perks, assistance, insurance, lounge passes, global entry and more. Read more at www.tpg.com for best cards.  Many say they want to fly business class but don’t realize fare range from 4K to 9K. We do have two good contacts that can get the sea seats at nearly half cost. Alen@skylux.com or ali@business–class.com. Tell them Suzy sent you. Important Air Dates Main Group – March 28 USA to Colombo (CMB) on  April 10 return from CMB .    Fly Dubia APR 7 FZ-1026 CMB – MLE 10:35 AM to 11:25 AM APR 10 FZ – 1025 MLE – CMB 7:45 AM to 9:35 AM (arrange flight to USA after 12 noon or later.) (To the six people on Sri Lanka only, just book round-trip air USA to Colombo March 28 to April 7.) Many airlines fly these routes such as Turkish, Emirates, Air France, Qatar and more. The best schedules and fares are on Qatar (QR) Group Air:  None. I know we will not meet the minimum required to make a group booking since this is a small group. See below on how to do your own air which gives you more flexibility. Internal flight – all 22 people will fly together from Colombo to the Maldives April 7. $295 has been added to your bill. Doing Own Air– Sometimes we offer group air but find few people book sometimes find better rates on own direct from hometown.  This provides you better flexibility to go early or extend at trip end.   Also, you can consider upgrading seat to business class but know prices average 6 to 9K. No group air tickets can be upgraded. (see below).   We recommend you now book flexible air tickets that can be refunded or changed. We like Google Flights.  3rd-party booking engines like Expedia, make it easy to book, but it is nearly impossible to handle air problems.  Buy direct from airline or pay a travel agent to ticket you.  If you need help air,  our guy Delhi can help, email flights@diversedestination.com with your exact air dates, destination, passport name and details with birthdate. Also, Above9Travel or SkyLux can help you with business-class seats by combining award points and cash at half the cost.  ali@above9.travel  Ph. (855) 777-6336 x1015 or Alen Monvel at SkyLux Travel, Direct Line: 844-207-1756. alen@skyluxtravel.com Airport Transfers- We will have one group airport pick up to accommodate as many people as possible. If your times fall outside the group, simply take a taxi to the Movenpick address 24 Dharmapala Mawatha Colombo 03, Tel: +94117450450 Contact email: hotel.colombo@movenpick.com  If you fall outside the group transfer time, here is a link that will allow you to schedule a transfer on your own https://www.rome2rio.com/s/Colombo-Airport-CMB/Mövenpick-Hotel-Colombo With travelers arriving and departing on different days and times, it is insurmountable to manage. Group air airport transfers are based on set time. Without group air, there can no longer be any pick-ups or drop-offs.  Unfortunately, now like other tour companies, transfers are your responsibility. (We’ve spent weeks each trip making spreadsheets of each person’s air to send to the supplier and then flights change. We then hire a guide, driver and pay airport parking fees. Last year in groups only half showed up as guides waited hours looking for others. Sometimes no AFSers showed up without informing us.) Transfers are not expensive. First, google your arrival airport website to see transfer tab. Suggestions to appear like airport bus, taxi details, Uber and more. Then connect on group Facebook page to set up sharing transfer cost if you like.  If you go early and check-in AFS hotel before group arrives, it’s your responsibility to change rooms with your roommate if necessary day one when trip begins. Meet Up With Group- On Mar 29 a time will be set to meet the group at the hotel for a briefing. More on this later. Baggage– Think light to ease your burden, not like you’re fleeing your homeland.  You change hotel properties several times. 1 carry-on bag & 1 medium suitcase not to exceed 45lb checked bag – weigh on a bathroom scale.  If you overpack by adding pre-or post-trip luggage, make prior plans as to where to stow the excess luggage. You may be responsible for any overage charges. Apple AirTags work great to track checked bags when the airline cannot, also good for carry-on.   Leave space for great souvenirs. Be sure to attach ID inside and out of carry-on and checked bag. Packing-  Google weather in Colombo a week prior departure – should be in the 80’s.   This is the best month to visit these tropical places but be prepared for humidity and possible brief rains. This trip is so easy. Simply pack summer clothing with a light jacket for nights and long flights.  Umbrella, hat, comfy sneakers, all hotels have hair dryers. Read Packing 101 in Heading Abroad with AFS This trip is so easy and totally casual. Simply pack summer clothing with a light jacket for nights and long flights. Gratuities –  It’s protocol to tip our local guides, assistants, porters, wait staff, drivers and ground staff. Guidelines have increased globally. A $130 total will be added to your invoice doing Sri Lanka with Maldives and $90 for those opting to do Sri Lanka only. Please understand this is only the suggested minimum.  For ease of distribution, your GTL will tip the different ground services for the entire group each day.

Tipping on own – If service is stellar, feel free to give more directly.  All we tourists leave behind is our reputation. I carry a stash of US ones in an envelope to draw from as needed.
